Marangu Route

Have you ever dreamed of climbing  the highest freestanding mountain in the world and the highest peak in Africa, Kilimanjaro is an experience for you. With its 5895 m, it is the quite an experience and an adventure for both the experienced hiker and the novice. With an experiences guide and team of porters, we will help you reach the summit of the highest peak in Africa.


We will share with you before your climb all the necessary information that you will need for your hike and also what equipment you should pack with you on the trip. After the climb, we can also help you plan some relaxing days either with safari or Zanzibar to celebrate your achievement. 

The Marangu route, also called the Coca-Cola route, is one of the more populars routes on Kilimanjaro and the only one that offer huts during the climb for the overnight stays. This is the oldest route on Kilimanjaro and one of the most established ones. This route is relatively steep so the increase in altitude every day is high, so we do recommend you have some experience on high altitude to acclimatize well. You will hike the same route for the ascent and descent.


During this hike, you will spend the nights in the huts along the hike.

Itinerary

Start Altitude: 1,860 m

Camp Altitude: 2,700 m

Hiking time: 5-6 hours


You will be picked up in Arusha/Moshi and transfer to the Marangu Gate for registration. You will begin the Kilimanjaro climb through rainforest to Mandara Hut, where you will stay the night. You will during this part of the trail, go through the beautiful rainforest on Kilimanjaro, getting a chance to see monkeys and beautiful butterflies around you.


Start Altitude: 2,780 m

Camp Altitude: 3,510 m

Hiking time: 5-6 hours


Climb into moorland, a very different landscape and climate to the day before. As you gain in elevation this day, you will see the peaks of Kilimanjaro through the clouds to motivate you to continue to go upwards.


Start Altitude: 3,720 m

Hike Altitude: 4,500 m

Hiking time: 5-7 hours


This is your extra acclimatization day to increase your chance to reach the summit on Kilimanjaro. This day, you will spend hiking to Mawenzi and back, getting your body a chance to adjust to the altitude. It is also a great opportunity to take some nice pictures before going back to sleep at Horombo Huts.


Start Altitude: 3,720 m

Camp Altitude: 4,700 m

Hiking time: 6-8 hours


This is the last day before the summit, so the hike of this day will ascend you to the Kibo Huts, located between the mountain peaks of Mawenzi Ridge and Kibo. You will hike through the alpine desert and reach the huts after lunch time, giving you time to rest and acclimatize to the altitude. It is important to drink plenty of water so you prepare for the ultimate challenge.


Start Altitude: 4,700 m

Camp Altitude: 3,750 m

Highest Point: 5,895 m

Hiking time: 10-14 hours


Start at night for your ultimate challenge of reaching the highest peak in Africa of 5,850 m. The most challenging part of this hike is in the start until you reach Gilman's Point, where you will catch your breath while watching the most magnificent sunrise over Eastern Africa. After this, you continue to Uhuru Peak of 5,895 m, to celebrate that you have successfully summited Kilimanjaro. 

You will then decsend back to Horombo Huts where, you will spend the night and get some well needed rest.

Camp Altitude: 1,860 m

Hiking time: 5-7 hours


This is the last day before you get some well-deserved rest and a hot shower. you will wake up at the Horombo Huts and hike through the rainforest down to Marangu gate, where you will be picked up and transfer to your accommodation in Arusha or Moshi. You will also received your certificate, celebrating your accomplishment of ascending the highest point in Africa!
